| Skaftfell was built at Austurvegur by the master builder, Guðfinnur Jónsson,
in 1907. It is a three storey house, 180 square metres and built according to
a Norwegian model with a neo-classic demeanor. The first few years it housed a
goldsmith shop, a restaurant and a boarding house. Later, other buisnesses took
over the house. It was a tavern for a while, a hotel and a restaurant and served
for years as a Norwegian nautical-home. In 1975 Mr. Garðar Eymundsson opened
his carpentry shop in Skaftfell but the year 1996 he and his wife, Mrs. Karólína
Jónsdóttir, donated the whole house to a group of enthuasiasts on
arts and culture, known now as the Skaftfell-group. |
|
Today the house is run by the Skaftfell-group which is a non-profit organization
but through the years they have received grants from both the town of Seyðisfjörður
as well as from the state.
It is a cultural centre with emphasis on art, serving all East-Iceland. It has
a Bistro and a internet café on the ground floor, a big gallery space on
the first floor and a guest apartment for scholars and artists on the third floor. |
